Charlotte Ladies Winning Season

Just three short years ago, the Charlotte Ladies Gaelic Football team was established and for two straight years battled on the pitch, recruited new talent but continued to come up just short on the field.  Nonetheless, approaching their third year without a win, they were determined to break that losing streak and boy, did they ever…

The vision of what the team could accomplish remained in their sights and the ladies set about training with a renewed focus and desire at the beginning of the 2009 season. Frequent reminders from the coaches said it would take time to develop a fluid team. There was no doubt about it, each player brought athletic excellence-albeit-from a variety of different sports ranging from golf to tennis, with only a few ever playing Gaelic Football.  Throughout the season, the team developed into an increasingly cohesive and skillful unit.

As a team who struggled to get their first win in years past, the Charlotte Ladies continued to surprise even themselves with successes in every tournament in 2009. The excitement began to grow when the season kicked off with The Atlanta Peach Cup 7’s Tournament where the ladies won the cup.  With that momentum in hand, the ladies went on to claim their home turf tournament and first ever Connolly’s Cup trophy.

While these two goals were tremendous accomplishments, the South Eastern Tournament seemed like an impossible feat because of the strong Atlanta teams. Opposing Clan Na Gael in the final of the tournament was a surreal moment, which would have been implausible just twelve months ago. The tough match ended with a Charlotte victory along with a deep respect for our mentoring competitors.
